My home was different...both my parents worked...had too...and I was taught to be as independent as possible...to always be in a position to take care of myself...even if I never had to. I had a very happy childhood and appreciate the way I was raised...(but like you...I know it's not a one size fits all so I'm not pointing fingers.)

With that being said, I struggle with the same thing you do. If total independence wasn't such a huge priority for me, I might have made different choices. I am (was? layoff) in a field solely for the independence it allowed me. I am an excellent earner! And I know to be seriously grateful for that. But I'm not passionate about it. And if I could do it all over again for passion...I would've chosen something else. Probably writing.

As a matter of fact, I'm currently hanging out with my brother in the ICU. Last night, one of the nurses asked me what I do and I explained my situation...he said "sorry" and I responded "Thanks...I KNOW I'll be okay. Plus, this recent layoff allowed me to get home and plan an extended trip right when I needed to." When that nurse left the room my brother looked at me and said "Mis, I'm sorry you lost your job...but you're right...you'll be okay. I know it. I could see you doing something different now." I asked him "What?" And he said "Writing. You should have a column somewhere. I can even picture your typical day...breakfast...then grabbing your coffee and sitting at your computer in your home and writing articles people want to read." Little brother told me what I've been denying for a while. Somewhere in my life plan, I am meant to write. Now if it were just that easy to get into it and make some money. ;)Milissahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04986484484324086968noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3385523154268826980.post-85549577122037198692011-12-09T09:00:46.055-06:002011-12-09T09:00:46.055-06:00Carol - thanks. :)

Your past is who makes you who you are, and if you'd pursued other things, maybe you wouldn't be spiritually who you are now.bluiishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08875634186680999572noreply@blogger.com
