Valentine's Day

I've always felt that Valentine's Day is not solely about romance, but about showing love to everyone you love. Maybe this is why my first Valentine's Day as a divorced person isn't upsetting me. I have a LOT of love in my life: parents, siblings, and possibly more friends than I've ever had before. And, of course, God. Most of the time I don't feel like I'm lacking much relationally. I feel very blessed. I only feel bad that I'm not giving a lot of Valentine gifts or mailing packages. I started thinking about it a few weeks ago, but the list grew longer and longer until I was overwhelmed, so I decided to stick to cards. :)

I made red velvet cupcakes for work:

I really wanted to make a rose cake (it's so beautiful!), but was consumed with guilt at the mere thought of making and eating that huge quantity of frosting. So I made cupcakes instead and used about 1/4 of the frosting recipe (which ended up tasting funny to me anyway).

My mom showed up at my office with flowers:

Lilies are my favorite, but I can't have them in the house because of the cats. So I love getting them at work! :)

Happy Valentine's Day to all my readers! Whether you're in a relationship or not, know that someone loves you!

PS: This post would be better if you were reading it while listening to Myla Smith's brand-new single, "Everything Changes." Download it here or on iTunes!

  1. I keep forgetting to link to/mention that song, but I really like it. :) "Everything changes in spite of you"--so true!

  2. Your cupcakes look scrumptious!

And those flowers are absolutely gorgeous!

  3. I can relate to feeling like Valentine's is for everyone -- not just romantic relationships. I enjoy Valentining my kids and sisters as much as my husband. Thanks for the post and the pretty, pretty pictures.

  4. Love your flowers :) You have a much better attitude towards V day as a single woman than I do. I hated every minute of vday, and I felt like every time someone told me Happy Valentines day it was like they were putting a huge "Kick me, I'm single" sign on my back. I am committed to having a more positive attitude like you :)

  5. I feel the same way about Valentine's Day and I've always loved it single or not! You're so right!

  6. BEAUTIFUL flowers!

I completely agree! Valentine's is for everyone with ANY kind of love. Even if all you love is cats...

To throw in a great example, a good guy friend really likes this woman and she has an austic boy. The woman has said she's not interested in him romantically. He's sad, but he still wanted to celebrate Valentine's in a way that wouldn't creep her out or make her think he's trying to get more from her than she's willing to give. SO, apparently there was this very expensive handbook/workbook/DVD thing about having an austistic kindergartner (he just went in) and she's wanted it for a while but couldn't afford it. He got it for her as a valentine's gift to show that he cares enough for her as a friend to celebrate her undying love for her son. I thought that was an EXCELLENT example of Valentine's Day. Doesn't hurt that her love language is gifts either. :)
